19.1.10

This week we've begun to embark on the shopping mission for Baby Bear's arrival.

It's hard not to get caught up but I'm trying to keep things as minimal as possible. I feel much the same about toys. I don't want to deprive our child, but I'd like to see him or her use their imagination when it comes to play, rather than being in a sea of whizzy plastic gadgets.*

Although I'm not really buying toys at the moment, I've gotten a couple of little things – just to surround Baby Bear's wee space in our room. But mostly I'm going to wait, because I don't think it's fair to decorate a space for someone I've never met yet. And we're so excited to meet you little one, not long to go now.

*For some reason, this excludes Mr.Potato head.

  1. Little teeny tiny piece of unsolicited advice (sorry!). In my humble experience, little light grabbable suckable things are the best. The monster got given lots of big soft toys, which she still ignores now. Of course, this doesn't rule out buying nice things that give you pleasure...

  2. Thanks Bex. I've made a start on those – today I bought Sophie the Giraffe! xx

(I've also stopped buying kids books that are really for me. Tsk Tsk)

  3. Sophie is brilliant! Sadly Matilda lost hers, she probably threw it out of the pushchair (she claims I left it somewhere...) but not before she had been well chomped on by those sore little gums. So progeny number 2 will be getting a brand new Sophie.

  4. I am so passionate about minimal toys. When I was little, every toy I had fit into a couple baskets in my bedroom closet. I spent most my time outdoors, drawing, writing, and sewing and making my own dolls and clothes. Good for you, for continuing a pattern that not many people follow these days :)

  5. I have been of the same thought pattern as you regarding toys. When I was pregnant I only bought felt and wooden toys, as well as some handmade pieces.

Unfortunately our home is filled with plastic whizz bang toys, many thanks to generous aunts, uncles and grannies.

I'd love to cull it all. We have purchased pieces here and there too, so we are at blame too.

And you know what? She doesn't even really play with them. She'd rather draw, sing, jump, run and play with everyday things.

Those items from Lark are lovely. xx
