This morning I received an email about our next Mother's Group. I couldn't make it last week as I had something on, and this week I happen to have an osteo appointment at the same time. To be honest, I think I am pretty okay with just letting Mother's Group go. I've realised I've made my own circle of mama (and mama to be) friends that live nearby. A couple I have met on my own, and a couple I have met through my husband, who works at a local cafe and is one of the friendliest bastards you'll ever meet and always happy to pimp his wife out for friendship and freelance design work. (Thanks PB!)

The other day I was at the cafe waiting for my take away coffee when I started chatting to a lovely girl that was pregnant with her first child. We got a long really well and I thought it would be great to catch up again but I didn't want to be all I'm Full Of Advice and freak her out, so we parted and I figured I'd probably bump into her again sooner or later.

The next night PB came home from work with a little envelope for me. Apparently someone had dropped it off. It had my name on the front and a little green star – the kind you get at school when you've done excellent work – on the back to seal it. Inside was a note from the girl I'd met the day before saying she'd love to catch up for coffee and hang out with me and BB sometime. She had left her phone number so I got in touch and we're going to catch up next week.

That's the second good random thing that has happened to me in the last few days and I'm very grateful for it. Although I still go through the annoyances of the daily grind, little gems like this really make me feel all warm and happy and good about life.

(Image of BB's flowers she received from her mate Henry, who is only about 2 weeks old! I can't remember the name of these blooms, but they smell so good, like sweet sugary butter.)

  1. Isn´t it great? I love things that remind us that life is beautiful and can be unexpected, if you let it. I guess if we´re just open we can see and recieve this random goodness...

  2. I was visiting a friend in Austin a couple weeks ago, and one night when we were out with a group of friends for drinks, I met a very sweet girl that I had so much in common with. I didn't get a chance to get her information before we left, so I've been creepily trying to find her on facebook. No luck yet, so you're lucky to have gotten that little green star :) I love making new friends.

  4. Those flowers are AMAZING! Gorgeous.

I love that you decided against the formal mother group. It seemed sorta forced and I think it is just wonderful that you've found people more your speed.

I hope the greatness keeps on rolling your way!!!

  5. i think those flowers are called paperwhites. they're a type of narcissi.

that's great that you made a new friend. i met one of my best friends in a restaurant, i was with iris and she was our waitress. we hit it off over a love of vintage children's books. then before we left, i asked for her number! and i am so glad i did, because she's wonderful!

  6. I think they're white jonquils - I have some on my table right now too and they make the whole house smell good. There is a girl in my mummy-yoga class who is the first mum I have met who I think I could be friends with, so maybe I should just pluck up the courage and give her my number. Making new friends when you're a grown up is so awkward! ps Love your knitting.

  7. Man, I can smell those jonquils from here. Mine are starting to push up through the earth. How they survive with me constantly scratching about in the soil, I'll never know.
That's brilliant. I love those random connections. They often turn out to be pure solid gold. You must be shining radiant sunny positive beams at the moment. Shine on, I say.

  8. It seems that everyone loves jonquils, they're a favourite of mine too.
It's wonderful that you're finding a circle of friends. Friendship can't be forced.
I've got my second mothers group tomorrow & I'm not sure I'll make any firm friends either. I seem to be the odd one out & a little different for them to get their head around. So I can relate to your situation.
I think these wonderful acts of kindness happen to you because of your beautiful nature. Not that I've ever met you... but I think you're lovely.
    Have a happy week.
