Although my childhood was abundant with love and toilet-paper roll craft, it was – for the most part – lacking in 80's brand-name toys. Proud owner of one My Child and one Barbie (no accessories). I don't recall feeling too jibbed at the time, the kids in my street had enough toys for the whole neighborhood to play with including He-Man, She-Ra and their respective much-coveted castles.
And yet. Every time I trawl through a thrift store I do a quick ransack of the toys for a Care Bear (for BB, of course). And today there it was in full ginormous pink glory. Untagged.
Excuse me. Is this for sale?
Yes.
How much is it?
Eight dollars.
ARE YOU CEREAL?!?! ONLY 8 BUCKS FOR A SUPER-SIZE CHEER BEAR AND NOSTALGIC FULFILLMENT?!
Um ok thanks. I think I'll take him.
My soft-toy-hating husbands' reply when I sent him the above photo:
It's official. I don't live there anymore. It's just a place I sleep most nights.

Oh. my. lord. I grew up on care bares. i'm overwhelmed with emotion and a few thoughts spring to mind...
ReplyDelete1. I had a my child and no barbie no accessories
2. I had a regular sized pink care bare just like that one (pretty sure my mum and dad still have it)
3. That pink sucker has to be a she, not he (c'com- your depravity cant reach that far?)
4. I NEEEEEEEED IT.
case closed.
(um im a loser but i LOVE rummy bears post days)
Ohhh, I love care bears too!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you - $8? Bargain!! My husband also thinks our home is just where he sleeps, and that is in The Munchkins room at the moment due to his work hours haha - poor guys ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's a look of pure love. Worth it for that alone.
ReplyDeleteI had one Barbie and a couple of hand me down Barbies (from a cousin who had EVERYTHING) plus the Sylvanian Families house and one family. That was my lot. And man did I ever treasure them (I still stop and stare at both if I find myself in a toyshop).
ReplyDeleteHowever. HOWEVER. As much as I love you Anna and regard you as one hell of a stylish gal, i've got to say i'm with PB on this one. If a giant pink Care Bear made it's way into our house, i'd be making my way out. Ha! xx
that is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI am the proud owner of a very pink POOCHIE dog. it will die with me.
Oh my the memories! I loved the Care Bears TV show. I never had a bear myself. I would have bought it in a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteSophie xx
I wasn't allowed a Barbie. When I won one in a race I cut off all its hair and dressed it in the clothes of my male flower fairy. So my parents probably needn't have worried. Or not for the reasons they thought. I loved the Care Bears. Looking back now they seem incrediby camp.
ReplyDeleteBB clearly loves good ol' pink CB. That's all the matters. Bx
Cute but I also HATE stuffed animals. I hesitantly would get them for my girls when they were young but only because they wanted them so badly and I would have felt like a horrible mom if I didn't get them a few. My husband regularly bought them for the girls, but oh my do I hate them.Quite often I would sneak them out of my house and donate them to some thrift store. Hey, here is a perfect example of the saying "someone's trash is someone else's treasure".
ReplyDeleteBut look at the smile on her face!!
ReplyDelete(I had a sheera doll!! Sadly (?) no castle!)
I still have my Care Bear. Yellow Sunshine...or something. Though it's a midget compared to BB's!
ReplyDeleteThat bear is rad... and so is the photo! Your daughter looks so happy :)
ReplyDeleteWow! So exciting. I remember having the small cheer bear. I'm sure I would have loved the super-size version :)
ReplyDeleteCan she be more cute?!?
ReplyDeleteShe is just perfect!
Oh.my.goodness.
ReplyDeleteThere is no "no" when it comes to buying a cheer bear. :)
I used to love that show.
It was one of my favourite shows/cartoons as well. Awww, I have to find it on youtube
ReplyDeleteOh my gracious! How happy she must be!

God I loved care bears. We had a bit of a deprived childhood in terms of toys too - I wasn't allowed a barbie (although I was allowed a "fake" cabbage patch doll from haymarket), but the boy next door had the entire castle grey skull! Battle cat, he-man, shera, the works ... he was a pain in the arse but my brother and I were over there every afternoon. Kellie xx
ReplyDeleteLOVE! The pink. The Rainbow. The big. It is all rad. My smallie and I would war over that toy. Though I'm usually with PB on the soft toy hate, there is something so comforting about a giant pink bear with a rainbow on it's chest, don't you think?
ReplyDeletebut look how happy BB looks!!!!! love it
ReplyDeletehaha, what an awesome find!! Your husband cracks me up. Your childhood toy collection sounds all to similar to mine, one My Child (still have it) and one Barbie. Happy days they were!
ReplyDeleteIt's so fluffy! I'm gonna die...
ReplyDeleteYou know we have a store here in Chicago that is like evil or something ! Every single time I want something I find it 35 year old sheets, a huge babystyle Lula Lamb chair , a louis bag and dior glasses. The thrift fairy rewards us and we find what we like . I love this bear and I am raising mine on non conventional toys and with the exception of some video games . It is not killing my kids and the use their imagination often!
ReplyDeleteNostalgia is always the hardest purchase opportunity to turn down. Although I love your husband's response, the photo makes it hard not to love!

My mum sewed a heart patch and a tail onto an old bear of mine and tried to pass it off as a carebear ... i was not fooled and i felt jipped :)
ReplyDeleteMy cool aunt broke the no barbies rule when I was 3!
haha! love his comment! the pic is so full of joy! <3
