The weather played havoc with BB's on-again-off-again party, eventually on-again but with a smaller crowd that had not re-planned their day from the earlier off-again status.

Unfortunately my parents couldn't come up from Melbourne this time, but PB's family traveled from all over Sydney (thank you!) to celebrate. A couple of close friends and kids from the street helped fill the backyard with rowdy merriment.

For the week leading up to her birthday, BB was adamant about having a spider cake (!) but mere days before the event changed her mind to a butterfly motif instead. Last year I made her first birthday cake, which subsequently remained uneaten, so this year I commissioned PB's mum – an excellent baker – to make a pretty and edible cake. BB stood frozen for the entire duration of Happy Birthday (she often does this when she's soaking up an incredible moment) and when the singing ceased, without an iota of hesitation leaned over and blew out the candles, one at a time. She then proceeded to frantically dive in for the smarties.

And when the party finished the rain poured down again.

Happy Birthday my little BB, you are the ever shining light in my day and I look forward to your wicked sense of humor, phenomenal dexterity and kind heart thriving even further in your 2's. xxx

  20. P.S - I think we need a tutorial on how to achieve Jill's daughters amazing kate Moss-esque gritty textured hair. I've been running under the clothesline all morning (balloons, vintage sheets and all) and sadly I look a little more like John Butler than kate Moss/Jills daughter. Hmph.

  22. had to quickly jump on to this to give hair pointers to those mothers out there with little cricket girls. that there little long haired run about is my ms ruby apple. dont know how she came out of me.

that hair. it was trimmed for the first time in her life last night. at 6.5 years old. that hair never saw scissors and rarely saw a brush. i would brush once every two weeks when the knots were so bad that i had no choice. when her hair would be literally horizontal from knots. i would use coconut oil to get the knots out. i have only ever washed her hair once a fortnight at the very most.

now that she is at school i brush every second day. but before school years - only once a fortnight.

and she has never ever had nits. despite breakouts at school. that is because her hair is never that clean. nits dont like it.

i loved leaving her hair alone and watching it develop its own style and personality by itself.

its like leaving your kids to dress themselves. i love to let their own style evolve without my input and direction. but it is a shame when you have a rad vintage piece that never ever gets worn.
